Etno Gastro Festival in Biograd

Many of the local festivals come and go unnoticed. One of them was this Etno Gastro Table festival in Biograd. Not any longer. What started as a small presentation of food from inner Croatia and Dalmatia, now became one of the biggest festivals of it’s kind combining cultural heritage from all regions of Croatia.

Costumes

This year, 5th year in a row, this festival even became international with folklore groups from Czech Republic joining in. The parade of costumes was quite impressive and each group was singing and dancing songs and dances of their home region. The riches and varieties of our heritage keep surprising us over and over again!

The center event of this festival that, by the way, is now three days long, is the table where hundreds of producers from all over the country exhibit their produce. Food, wine, traditional toys, souvenirs, cheese, cakes…all that can be found at this table. And it is a VERY long table stretching for 930 meters this year!

The table!

However, the quality of the offer varies and the organizers should improve that as they have been improving for all these years. Maybe more wine makers and more interesting delicacies. We saw a few too many blackberry wines but not a single sokol sausage from a nearby Nin… Our bags were full – again, it was a plastic bag and they should have a souvenir, cotton or traditionally woven bags. We bought Imotski cake, Figurica Marastina wine and lots of cheese! I was surprised to discover the traditionally made cheeses of Đurđevac region! These cheeses – we bought one with walnuts and one with olives – are amazing! Light and airy, they are a perfect snack. Now we will have to look for the producers to find them somewhere else as I have not seen them in stores.

Blackberry wine, anyone?
Cooking for a big party!

The event is quite interesting and makes a nice beginning of tourist season in our home town. Hopefully, it will continue to improve over the years and it will draw more and more quality exhibitors. I just love to find great food and new tastes!
