Best Restaurants in Croatia – Plavi podrum in Volsko, Opatija

Although I am mostly oriented towards Dalmatia and bringing travelers to  Zadar and south, I also try to push them to other beautiful and exceptional places in the country. Of course, great food is a must for every serious traveler as they rely on my recommendations. One of the places I have been recommending for a while – without actually eating there – was Plavi podrum in charming Volosko.

So, few weeks back, as I was in the area, I decided to actually go to Plavi podrum and enjoy it on my own. This iconic place is famous for sea food and great selection of wines as the owner, Mrs. Kramarić, is one of the master somellier’s in the country and a well respected authority on wines (and food, of course)

Since I always enjoy fresh local produce, Kvarner scampi (as one of the absolute best what Croatia can offer!) was high on the list- And especially when I saw their scampi menu: Škampijada na Kvarneru!

We started with interesting couvert …

…with scampi cocktail to follow…

All this was accompanied by light malvasia.

As the restaurant was starting to fill up for lunch, we continued with Rainbow tagliolini with scampi, peaches and Istrian black truffles

Then it was the time for a glass of pošip…to accompany Croatian classic: buzara (with lobster size scampi!)

Overall, all dishes have been masterfully prepared and full of very interesting combinations. Everything quite gentle to follow the tender texture and sweet taste scampi but still quite memorable! Probably the weakest point of the menu was the chocolate dessert which simply lacked that extra touch…

All this may seem a bit extravagant (for those who are not used to culinary events of this sort) but this was one superb meal that explores various possibilities with one of Croatia’s most celebrated foods: kvarner scampi. Also, this is a great place for dinner.

Plavi podrum has again been voted among top 5 restaurants of Croatia and it should definitely be high on the list of every foodie coming to travel in Croatia

Isn’t Volosko the name? We’ve been there twice, but we had our meals at Ribarnica. Not so classy, but cheap and soooo yummy:)
    Pozdrav iz Timisoara!

The meals on the photos look really delicious. However, other than great food, I am curious to know what makes Plavi Podrum one of the best restaurants in Croatia because there are other restaurants that also know how to serve great meals.

  6. @ Sarah – have you eaten there? Service, fresh ingredients, superb wine list and just the very feeling while sitting there all make Plavi Podrum one of the top restaurants in my book. And they were also voted among the top 5 restaurants in the country just a month ago in that Jutarnji list poll.
