Dubrovnik Cable Car

Dubrovnik Cable Car (or aerial tram) is the latest attraction in Dubrovnik and is already a must do. Dubrovnik did have an older cable car in operation since 1969 but the facilities have been destroyed in the recent war in early 1990s. Completely restored, the operation started again in 2010. So, on our last visit to Dubrovnik few weeks ago, this was high on our “to do” list.

The starting point

The starting point is easy to reach. Just go to the northern side of the walls and you will see the cabins coming and going. Once you reach the starting point, buy tickets – 80 Kn per adult and 40 for children (cc 10 Euros and 5 Euros) and you will be escorted to a cabin. One staff member is always with passengers.

The ride is very smooth (except when it crosses the big pillar) and fairly short but the views are breathtaking. Try to get the best place for taking photos while going up!

On the top, the company who runs the cable car did a very nice job with building a cafe with both indoor and outdoor space. The top of the hill is often windy so keep that in mind if coming in cooler months.

And there is also a great platform from where the view of the city is simply spectacular!

Dubrovnik is beautiful from the top of 415 meters high Srdj! Another great spot is on the other side of the cable car building: next to Imperial fortress. The fortress has been build by Napoleon after they conquered The Republic of Ragusa. It is now housing the Museum of “Domovinski rat” war as this stronghold was severely attacked by the Yugoslav Army in 1991. It took great effort to save the fortress from being captured during the most horrific attacked on the Old Town on December 6th 1991.

There is an old paved, one-lane road leading to Srdj but rarely used now after the cable car is in function again.

Dubrovnik Cable Car is a great fun for whole family and one of the must do things to get a better view of the perfection called Dubrovnik!

Fun. It must have existed when I first visited in the mid-80s, but I guess I was “busy” sunbathing and swimming, and going to Disko Bachos. Is the casino still somewhere on the outskirts of DU?

  4. huh…”the casino” is no longer there. There are only small “automat clubs” and one casino is supposed to be at the Rixos. But I have no interest in casinos so don’t listen to me
