Like most of us, I have been always fascinated by caves. There is something mysterious and frightening about them that we started exploring them even as teenagers. Luckily, Croatia is fantastic for caving of all sorts. So when Marjan of Zara Adventure invited us for a caving trip few years back, I was thrilled. Now we offer the caving trip to Modrič Cave as a part of our adventures in Croatia section.

Modrič cave is one little cave near the small village Rovanjska just after you cross Maslenica Bridge. The cave was discovered back in the early 80’s by an speleologist looking for a hiding place from bura when his bike broke down. Very likely on a day like the one we went there last week! The picture does not reflect the storm speed wind and the bitter cold!

Luckily, the temperature in the cave is always about 18 degrees and that makes it perfect for year round exploring.
Marijan gave us the overall (even for kids!) and helmets with carbide light on top making this a “true” speleological expedition unlike those in the caves adjusted for masses.

Modrič cave is filled with cave decorations of all sorts! Quite rich for such a small cave! The cave is some 800 meters long and the tours last about 2 hours with all the preparations and the short walk to the entrance.

Needles to say, this is a fantastic adventure for entire families and specially for kids! Marjan is a great guy and fantastic guide making this trip to Croatian underworld very special and unique.

Croatia has many caves due to limestone karst terrain and we have been seeing a lot of them on our journeys. Of course, we don’t enter them since that is strictly against the law. More on that on some other occasion!
